The Ford Mustang is an American icon and was originally based on the Ford Falcon compact. The first production Mustang rolled off the assembly line in Dearborn, Michigan on 9th March, 1964 and was introduced to the public at the New York World’s Fair on 17th April, 1964. It was, and remains one, of the most successful product launches in automotive history. The Mustang sold over one million units in its first 18 months on the market and its legend lives on with revised models still in production today after 43 years. With each revision, the Mustang saw an increase in overall dimensions and in engine power. By 1969, the muscle car race was on and Ford offered a 351, 428 Cobra Jet and other performance engines available in most models and often ordered with the Fastback and Mach One cars. The ’69 Boss 302 and Shelby (available since 1965), were specialty Mustangs offered with both high-performance engines and race-breed suspensions. Ford added a Fastback to its 1965 Mustang line-up but the convertible holds a special place in American culture and was heavily publicised as ‘a car to escape the mundane nature of life.’

This very well-presented example was built in the Dearbon, Michigan factory as the automatic, V8, convertible example as you see today. Offered in the desirable colour combination of Silver Blue metallic over a Pony Blue and white leather interior, this Mustang has been the subject of a restoration over the past two years. During the restoration the car was treated to various works including a bare metal respray, new interior, a replacement 302 V8 engine mated to a Edelbrock carburettor, new front suspension, a brake overhaul and a new convertible hood. The cost of the work exceeding £20,000. Also fitted is a Kicker Bluetooth system with a USB charging port for modern technology. The vendor reports that this Mustang attracts huge amounts of attention wherever it goes although suggests that the rear interior panels and dashboard would benefit from refurbishment to match the restoration. Offered with many original parts and panels, the paintwork is in excellent condition and the interior and engine bay are both presented very well indeed. This well-presented example sits on four new Hankook white wall tyres and comes complete with a sizeable history file including many invoices and photographs of the restoration, the UK registration document, and an MoT test certificate valid until July 2022.
