  • Coachwork converted to Spyder specification by Carrozzeria Campana of Modena
  • 4.9-litre Ghibli SS V8, engine stamped AM115/49 and numbered to correspond with chassis 1578
  • Extensively restored and mechanically upgraded, with well-documented European provenance

Delivered new to Switzerland in 1970, this beautifully presented Maserati Ghibli subsequently spent many years in a prominent Brussels-based collection, where it was reportedly maintained without regard to expense. The car later passed into the ownership of a French Calvados producer before being brought to the UK by its current owner in 2022

Chassis AM115 1578 is one of the Ghibli coupés converted to open Spyder configuration by Carrozzeria Campana of Modena, a long established coachbuilder with close historical ties to Maserati. Campana’s conversions have become an interesting chapter in the model’s history, offering the elegant proportions of Giugiaro’s original design in the considerably rarer open configuration.

Of particular interest is the car’s engine specification. Although previously catalogued as a 4.7-litre Ghibli, closer examination of the engine has revealed the designation AM115/49, identifying it as the larger 4.9-litre V8 associated with the Ghibli SS. Significantly, the engine also carries the number 1578, corresponding with the car’s chassis number. Together with the SS badging worn by the car, this raises the compelling possibility that chassis 1578 was originally built with the more powerful 4.9-litre engine before undergoing its conversion by Campana.

The car underwent a comprehensive restoration and mechanical reconditioning prior to its sale by Gallery Aaldering in 2022. Finished in its reported original metallic black with a matching convertible hood and contrasting cream leather upholstery, the coachwork presents beautifully, with good panel alignment and a deep, lustrous paint finish. The interior was extensively refurbished using high quality leather, complemented by neatly fitted black carpeting, a burrwood Maserati steering wheel and matching gear knob. The car sits on bespoke Turrino wire wheels fitted with Avon tyres.

The 4.9-litre quad-cam V8 is coupled to Maserati’s five-speed ZF manual gearbox, providing the effortless performance and long-legged grand touring ability for which the Ghibli became renowned. The suspension and braking systems were extensively renewed during the restoration, including replacement bushes, shock absorbers and brake components.

More recently, the car has benefited from a series of mechanical improvements intended to enhance its reliability and usability. These include a replacement clutch and rebuilt master cylinder, high-torque starter motor, upgraded electric cooling fans, higher output alternator and a stainless steel exhaust system with new headers. A modern audio head unit with GPS and iPhone connectivity has also been fitted. The car has received further specialist attention and tuning from Colin Clarke Engineering.

Accompanying chassis 1578 is a history file containing invoices, maintenance records and supporting documentation, together with a Maserati Classiche presentation box housing the owner’s manual, parts catalogue, electrical diagrams and additional marque literature.

Today, chassis 1578 represents a particularly interesting example of Maserati’s celebrated Ghibli, combining Giugiaro’s timeless design with Campana’s distinctive open coachwork and the desirable 4.9-litre SS V8. The correspondence between the engine and chassis numbers adds a further dimension to its history, suggesting a potentially significant original mechanical specification that merits further investigation.

Beautifully presented, extensively restored and thoughtfully maintained for continued use, this Maserati offers an appealing opportunity to acquire an unusual and well-documented example of one of Italy’s finest grand tourers.
