Since 1958 Lola have been at the forefront of building customer race cars. In 1963 they became a prominent name in motor racing when the Mk.6 was built. That year it was campaigned at the Le Mans 24 hour race in rivalry with the immense Ford GT40. Since then, its F3000 and Indy car single-seaters have been front-runners many years over, notably taking Nigel Mansell to his CART Championship in 1993. In 1996 the F3000 Championship became a one-make series and Lola was contracted to build all the cars, an arrangement that lasted until 2005 when F3000 was replaced by the GP2 race series.

This Lola T91/50 was originally campaigned during the 1991-92 season by the Barclays, Eddie Jordan Racing Team who were later taken over by Middlebridge International Racing. Damon Hill would pilot the car with multiple success taking fourth place in both the French and Italian Championship races and finishing that year’s season in seventh position with 11 points. Damon would go on to win his first Formula One race at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 1993 and would later become the Formula One World Champion in 1996 onboard his Williams-Renault FW18.

Originally fitted with a DFY Cosworth unit, this Lola T91/50 has more recently been repainted in its original Barclays livery and as such presents in wonderful condition. The Lola retains its important components such as suspension, brakes, pedal box and one bank of exhaust manifolds; however there is no engine and the gearbox is only fitted with a crownwheel and pinion. The current vendor has displayed the car at multiple events including the 25th Anniversary of Middlebridge at Gatcombe Park, pictures of which can be found on the Middlebridge website. In such fine cosmetic order the Lola would make a fantastic display car for the new owner, or with further mechanical work could be returned to the track. It comes complete with various automobilia including Barclays team wear, Damon Hill signed photos and a Barclays liveried model. This is a very special example indeed and without doubt played a significant part in Damon Hill’s Formula One success. A worthy candidate for any enthusiast or serious collector.
